What studies measured after the gland responded
Developers first sought a useful piece of the body’s natural growth hormone starter. Childhood tests came first; later studies asked what hormone changes meant for older adults.
The short version: which results were measured
Scientists designed sermorelin to prompt growth hormone release, then tested whether children grew faster. Later studies examined aging adults, with blood tests and measures of fat, sleep, and thinking. A larger hormone burst was easier to show than a lasting health benefit. You need to keep those different questions separate when weighing treatment.
A hormone rise tells you about release, without proving how well you'll feel.
During the first treatment year, children lacking growth hormone roughly doubled their yearly height gain. In older men, six months of treatment raised IGF-1 by 35–40%. This is a hormone the liver makes to help tissues grow. Fat near internal organs fell roughly 5%. The combined weight of muscle, bone, organs, and water rose; muscle alone wasn't measured. Another study found improved thinking scores in 89 older adults.
The numbered marks point to the papers behind each result. Tesamorelin is a related medicine, and you can't transfer its results to sermorelin.
What Sermorelin sets in motion below your brain
Cells in the pituitary, the small gland under your brain, respond when sermorelin attaches. Stored growth hormone then enters blood in bursts from those cells [9]. You receive a medicine that starts release, while the gland supplies growth hormone.
The body's own brakes continue to limit how much growth hormone comes out.
A brake hormone eases from time to time, allowing a larger burst [9]. Growth hormone prompts the liver to make IGF-1, a hormone that helps tissues grow. As this liver hormone rises, growth hormone release slows again [9]. Those limits explain interest in sermorelin without settling years of safety for you.
Men given a steady flow of the natural starter hormone still released growth hormone in bursts [10]. Over a 24-hour period, the total matched treatment given in separate bursts using equal amounts [10]. A later single shot caused a smaller response after the steady treatment. The gland had become less responsive, prompting studies of treatment with gaps [10].
Healthy people responded to vein doses as low as 0.25 micrograms for each kilogram the person weighed. The strongest response occurred at 1–2 micrograms per kilogram. Growth hormone activity peaked near 90 milliunits per liter [3]. A milliunit is a thousandth of the lab's standard unit for hormone activity. That test number isn't an amount for your shot. Through the nose, only 3–5% reached blood, too little for the intended response [3].

What Sermorelin changed on tests of fat, thought, and sleep
Blood tests found larger growth hormone bursts within 30–60 minutes after medicine was injected beneath the skin. The liver responds by producing more of its growth-helping hormone. Researchers tested these hormone levels alongside changes in people's bodies and thinking.
Those measurements don't establish that your strength or general health will improve.
Older men received about 1 milligram at bedtime over 6 months. The liver's hormone rose 35–40%. Fat surrounding internal organs fell about 5% [6]. Muscle, bone, organs, and water together weighed more, without showing muscle gain alone. Nighttime growth hormone bursts grew larger but didn't come more often [5].
In 89 healthy older adults, 6 months of treatment improved several thinking scores [7]. Picture arranging and timed tasks were among the tests. Better scores went with greater growth hormone activity, but that link didn't establish every cause [7]. You can't read those test gains as proof of every everyday improvement.
A related hormone treatment was tested in 13 older people [8]. Participants woke less at night and had a longer first stretch without dreaming. About 70% had higher growth hormone release [8]. The response was weaker than in younger people, a limit that matters at your age.
What Sermorelin Research Results showed in the people tested
Height gain and hormones measured in blood gave researchers their clearest results. Thinking tests added another finding, with limits on what you can expect yourself.
Height: The 1996 Geref International Study Group enrolled 110 children before puberty who lacked growth hormone. Yearly growth began at 4.1 centimeters. The rate reached 8.0 centimeters per year at 6 months and 7.2 at 12 months. Daily shots supplied 30 micrograms for each kilogram the person weighed beneath the skin [1]. Researchers called 74% good growth responders at 6 months [1]. The summary doesn't give the extra growth needed to qualify; bone development stayed normal.
Children's height gains don't establish an adult benefit for you.
In Kirk's 1994 study, children with unexplained shortness grew faster over 12 months. Yearly height gain rose from 4.8 to 7.2 centimeters. They received 20 micrograms per kilogram twice daily [2]. Predicted adult height increased about 3.4 centimeters. Growth returned to its earlier rate about 6 months after treatment stopped [2].
Hormones: Vittone's 1997 study involved 13 men aged 64–76. They received 2 milligrams nightly for 6 weeks and had larger growth hormone bursts [5]. Bursts weren't more frequent. Researchers couldn't establish a clear rise in the liver's hormone or the protein that transports the hormone through blood [5]. This means the study didn't prove a rise, rather than proving no change at all.
Merriam's 2011 work studied older adults given about 1 milligram nightly for 6 months. The liver's hormone rose 35–40% [6]. Fat near organs fell, while muscle, bone, organs, and water together weighed more. Growth hormone bursts didn't fully regain the younger pattern. Women receiving estrogen, a sex hormone, had rises below 10%. Men and women without estrogen treatment had about 40% rises [6]. Your other treatment can alter the response.
Thinking: Vitiello's 2006 study treated 89 healthy older adults for 6 months [7]. Picture arranging, timed work, and other thinking scores improved regardless of sex or estrogen use. These were gains in the people tested, without a promised result for you.
What Sermorelin Benefits have support from measurements
The studies checked specific changes rather than whether people simply felt younger. Start with what was measured, then consider whether the people resemble you.
- Height: Children short of growth hormone or short for unexplained reasons grew faster over 12 months [1][2].
- Growth hormone: The larger bursts occurred in studies using amounts that included 1 milligram and 30 micrograms for each kilogram the person weighed daily [1][5][6]. These were shots beneath the skin in studies, not amounts chosen for you.
- The liver's hormone: Older adults had 35–40% rises at 6 months [6]. A separate childhood finding rated 74% as good growth responders [1]. That percentage concerns growth, not an adult hormone rise; the summary doesn't state the growth cutoff.
- Fat and the rest of the body: A 6-month study found about 5% less fat around organs [6]. Muscle, bone, organs, and water together weighed more. That combined measure can't establish the amount of muscle gained.
- Thinking: Over 6 months, 89 older adults improved at planning, picture arranging, and timed tasks [7]. A separate 152-person trial tested tesamorelin, including people with mild thinking problems [11]. Improved planning in that trial doesn't establish the same effect from sermorelin.
- Sleep: Older people receiving a related hormone treatment woke less at night [8]. Their first stretch of sleep without dreaming lasted longer.
These studies prompted hormone release rather than supplying growth hormone directly. Read more about fat measurements when weighing what the body changes mean for you.
What Sermorelin fat studies measured around the organs
Healthy older men received about 14 micrograms per kilogram of weight at bedtime, roughly 1 milligram. After six months, body fat was about 5% lower [6]. Muscle, bone, organs, and water together weighed more, without showing muscle gain alone. The liver hormone rose 35–40% [6].
This wasn't proof of general weight loss for you.
Adults with excess belly fat received a different drug, tesamorelin, for 12 months. They received 2 milligrams daily beneath the skin. Compared with placebo, a shot without active drug, belly scans showed 35 centimeters squared less fat area near organs. That area counts squares a centimeter across; it doesn't give total fat weight. Muscle, bone, organs, and water together gained 1.4 kilograms. Fat across the chest, belly, and back fell 1.4 kilograms. The liver hormone rose 92 micrograms per liter of blood [10].
These are tesamorelin findings, not sermorelin results for you.
Blood fats, a protein linked to inflammation, and neck-artery thickness were described as improved [10]. Inflammation is the body's response to injury or illness. The summary doesn't state each test's direction or size of change.
Growth hormone helps fat cells use stored fat. That may explain fat loss without establishing broad weight-loss treatment.
What Sermorelin muscle measurements do and do not show
Merriam's 6-month study found a rise in the combined weight of muscle, bone, organs, and water [6]. Muscle was part of that measure, but researchers didn't weigh muscle alone. You can't turn the result into a measured gain in strength.
A separate study tested sermorelin with two other hormone-release drugs in 105 men. The men had low testosterone, the main male sex hormone. Each drug was given at 100 micrograms three times daily. Over an average 134-day course, the liver hormone rose [12]. That blood test didn't measure how much muscle the men gained.
The combination doesn't tell you how much of the effect came from sermorelin.
Adult female rats received a related drug daily at 0.5 milligrams for each kilogram the rat weighed [13]. Their bones contained more minerals, the hard material that gives bone its firmness. Bones became larger without becoming denser for their size. That was a finding in rats, not proof of stronger bones in you.
Adult sermorelin studies found increased weight from muscle, bone, organs, and water together. Muscle growth alone remained unmeasured. Healthy people with normal hormone levels remain poorly studied.
What Sermorelin studies leave unanswered about testosterone
Studies comparing treated people with others haven't established that sermorelin raises testosterone. Testosterone is the main male sex hormone, controlled separately from growth hormone. Growth hormone and sex hormones can influence each other, but human evidence for higher testosterone remains weak.
A growth hormone result can't answer your question about testosterone by itself.
Some doctors describe testosterone changes after sermorelin, without a trial checking the cause. Sigalos's 2017 study used combined hormone-release treatment in men whose testosterone was low [12]. Researchers chiefly checked the liver’s growth-helping hormone rather than testosterone. Your concern about low testosterone needs evidence directed at that hormone.

What Sermorelin tests prove about a response
Blood tests consistently found growth hormone release after sermorelin in human studies. Healthy people responded to 0.25 micrograms for each kilogram the person weighed delivered into a vein. The largest response occurred at 1–2 micrograms per kilogram [3]. Older men had larger bursts after 6 weeks of shots beneath the skin [5]. Children's responses appeared within the first month [1].
A measurable response doesn't prove every health improvement you may hope for.
At 6 months, older adults had a 35–40% rise in the liver hormone [6]. Men with low testosterone also had rises during combined treatment [12]. Blood tests established those hormone changes, without establishing every later effect on health.
After 6 months, older adults had less fat and more combined muscle, bone, organ, and water weight [6]. After 6 months, another trial found better planning and timed thinking scores in 89 older adults [7]. A separate 152-person tesamorelin trial found better thinking after 20 weeks [11]. You need to keep that different drug beside its finding.
Younger healthy adults may respond differently from the children and older adults studied. The trials also didn't settle every illness or medicine question that affects your care.
What Sermorelin vs Ipamorelin can explain without a direct trial
Sermorelin and ipamorelin reach different receptors, the parts of gland cells where a hormone starts its action. Sermorelin copies the natural starter for growth hormone release. Ipamorelin imitates ghrelin, the hormone involved in hunger. Both drugs can increase growth hormone, although different steps inside cells start the release.
That difference explains interest in combinations, without proving which drug offers you more benefit.
Ipamorelin causes relatively little rise in cortisol, the stress hormone, or prolactin, which supports milk production. Older related drugs caused more of these changes. This isn't a direct safety trial comparing ipamorelin with sermorelin.
The numbered comparison concerns another drug, not ipamorelin. A related hormone-release drug produced a 47-fold growth hormone rise. The natural starter hormone produced a 20-fold rise alone. Combining that drug with the natural starter produced a 54-fold rise [18]. These three results support a combined hormone effect, not a tested ipamorelin advantage.
Sigalos's 2017 study combined sermorelin with two other hormone-release drugs over 134 days [12]. Men with low testosterone had a rise in the liver hormone. Ipamorelin wasn't tested, and the combination didn't isolate sermorelin's part. Keep this limit beside sermorelin vs ipamorelin claims you read.
What Sermorelin vs Tesamorelin changes in blood and in studies
Sermorelin has a 29-residue chain; each residue is an amino acid, one small part used in proteins. Half the sermorelin leaves human blood in about 4.3 minutes [4]. Geref's approval concerned children lacking growth hormone; sales ended for business reasons in 2008 [15]. You can't extend that approval to adult aging.
Tesamorelin has a fatty acid, a small part of fat, attached at one end to slow breakdown.
That attachment helps tesamorelin stay in blood longer.
Tesamorelin's 44-residue chain copies the longer natural starter. FDA approval in 2010 concerned excess belly fat linked to treatment for an infection that weakens the immune system [17]. That approval belongs to tesamorelin, not sermorelin.
Adults with excess belly fat received tesamorelin at 2 milligrams daily over 12 months. Compared with placebo, treatment without active drug, the fat area near organs on belly scans was smaller by 35 centimeters squared, counted as squares a centimeter across [10]. Muscle, bone, organs, and water together gained 1.4 kilograms. Another study gave 1 milligram daily for 20 weeks to 152 adults. Planning improved, including in people with mild thinking problems [11].
Both drugs act at the same part of gland cells. Tesamorelin includes chain parts 30–44 and added protection, while sermorelin ends at part 29. That explains breakdown differences, without deciding which treatment fits you.
What a Sermorelin combination changed in men’s blood tests
Sigalos's 2017 study included 105 men with low testosterone, the main male sex hormone. Sermorelin was given at 100 micrograms. A second hormone-release drug was given at 100 micrograms, and a third at 100 micrograms. Shots went beneath the skin three times daily. The liver hormone rose over 134 days [12]. Some medicines affecting estrogen, a sex hormone, weakened that rise [12].
A combined result can't tell you what sermorelin would have done alone.
These drugs act at separate parts of the cells within the gland. Their effects meet at growth hormone release and can strengthen each other [18]. Researchers therefore tested whether combinations produced more than simply adding separate effects.
Published human studies paired sermorelin with these other hormone-release drugs [12]. The findings show a hormone response under those study conditions. They don't establish a combination for your treatment. For a separate drug question, read sermorelin vs ipamorelin.
What Sermorelin leaves working compared with HGH shots
HGH means human growth hormone, the hormone supplied directly by growth hormone shots. Sermorelin instead prompts growth hormone release from the gland while the body's brakes stay active. Direct hormone shots can reduce the gland's own production. These are different ways to raise the hormone in your blood.
Working brakes suggest a possible benefit, without proving that sermorelin is safer.
No adult trial with a comparison group directly tested sermorelin's safety against growth hormone shots [19]. A reason why treatment might be safer doesn't amount to a measured safety advantage. Your decision needs that missing comparison kept in view.
From your twenties onward, growth hormone release falls about 15% per decade [14]. By age 55, the daily amount is roughly 25 micrograms for each kilogram the person weighed. Micrograms measure millionths of a gram. These are amounts naturally released, not amounts for your prescription. Sermorelin might strengthen bursts while the body's limits keep working.
That possible difference doesn't settle which treatment would be safer for your health.
What Sermorelin and GLP-1 drugs aim to change
Sermorelin starts growth hormone release from the gland beneath your brain. GLP-1 drugs copy a gut hormone that helps control appetite, stomach emptying, and insulin. Insulin is the hormone that lowers blood sugar. These actions affect different body functions, so your reason for treatment matters.
A drug for a different purpose isn't a direct substitute based on its name alone.
Sermorelin studies measured children's growth and older adults' hormones, fat, and combined muscle, bone, organ, and water weight. GLP-1 studies examined blood sugar, body weight, and heart health in people with related illness. No published trial directly compared sermorelin with a GLP-1 drug. The available evidence doesn't support a general claim that either drug is better for you.
